Exploring the links between Northern Irish and Polish wartime history through learning, site visits and remembrance.
2022

The story
RHCPS took part in the For Your Freedom & Ours Shared History Educational Campaign alongside participants from Glen Community Centre and other local partners.
Across a number of weeks, the programme explored the historical links between Northern Irish and Polish communities, with particular focus on the Polish Air Force in Northern Ireland and the service of Polish airmen during the Second World War.
Learning sessions helped participants place local history within a wider European story, examining wartime movement, aviation, service and the connections created between communities during the conflict.
The final day included a visit to the Ulster Aviation Society, where participants explored aircraft, engineering and aviation material connected with Northern Ireland’s wartime history.
Participants also visited the Polish Second World War graves at Milltown Cemetery in Belfast, providing an opportunity for remembrance and reflection on the lives of Polish personnel who served far from home.
The project combined historical research, practical visits and shared discussion, helping build understanding through direct engagement with places and surviving material.
RHCPS was grateful for the opportunity to take part in the programme. The project was delivered with support from Central Good Relations Funding, T:BUC and The Executive Office.
